POW Camp Road is a typical graded gravel road in the Gulf Coastal Plains of southern Mississippi. However, POW Camp Road is not about the road itself. The road is in an area called the POW Camp Recreation Area in the De Soto National Forest. German prisoners of war were held here during WWII. A few concrete ammunition bunkers are the last remnants of the POW camp. However, its history lives on. In total, there were about 2300 prisoners held at this camp. Primitive dispersed camping is allowed near the POW Camp site shortly after the start of the road. There are no services in this recreation area. Keep an eye open, especially near the small lake. Alligators live in these waters.
